LShift is a small, high-tech software development consultancy that does big things. We were founded in London in 2000, and we have been actively contributing to the open source community ever since, including the development and successful spin-off of RabbitMQ. LShift is developer-centric — our developers are responsible for all aspects of software delivery, including technology selection, design and delivery, project and account management.
We believe that effective agile development requires teams that are:
- highly motivated
- as small as possible
- as highly skilled as possible
- as unencumbered as possible
We therefore do not recruit for a particular technical role, but look for broad and deep skills and experience, for people familiar with a broad range of operating environments and programming languages, combined with a high level of software engineering expertise.
A good Shifty will have the following skills:
- Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, complexity
- Experience with different programming paradigms (definitely OO, at least one of functional or declarative, and any others a bonus!)
- Versed in several programming languages
- Experience of all stages in the project life-cycle
- Good Unix and Windows skills
Other characteristics we expect:
- You care about technology
- You know what makes projects succeed
- You have a pretty good idea how to stop them failing ;-)
Shifties are all required to act as client-facing Lead Developers, managing all technical aspects of a project from its inception through to delivery. This has led to an ethos of using the right tool for the job which is reflected in the range of technologies we use; we have built projects that are deployed on Unix, Windows, Android & iOS, and have used C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, Scala, Ruby, F#, Scheme and Erlang in production.
Our client list is also broad, and includes companies from the financial, telecommunications, retail, broadcast, publishing and technology sectors.
Graduates
We do look for exceptional graduates to join our team. We do not have a separate graduate role and expect all our technical staff to be prepared to take on the Lead Developer regardless of experience. The requirements are therefore the same as our normal recruitment standards, although we obviously do not expect much exposure to the full project life-cycle.
Internships
We also run an internship programme, taking one or two students each year for four to six months. The experience inevitably varies as we work with a wide range of languages and industry sectors, but we ensure that during their time at LShift every intern:
- works directly on at least one client project
- works with at least two languages
- gets exposure to other parts of the Software Development Life-cycle
Interns can also sometimes lead internal projects depending on the nature of the work and their skills and experience.
We expect our interns to play a full part in projects and so our requirements for interns are similar to our full-time staff:
- Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, complexity
- Experience with different programming paradigms (definitely OO, at least one of functional or declarative)
- Familiar with several programming languages
- Unix and Windows skills
- Availability for at least 4 months, ideally 6
